Both Austin ISD and the University of Texas found themselves completely locked out of Canvas — the online learning platform basically everyone uses to submit assignments, post grades, and keep classes running — after a pretty serious cybersecurity incident hit the company behind the software.
Instructure, the Utah-based company that runs Canvas, got hit by a widespread breach that cascaded out to school districts and universities across the country. Austin just happened to be caught in the crossfire, and the timing couldn't be more fun — you know, right when folks are trying to wrap up coursework and keep things moving.
For UT students already juggling finals stress and AISD teachers trying to keep lesson plans on track, suddenly losing access to the platform where literally everything lives is no small headache. Think missing assignment deadlines, inaccessible course materials, and a whole lot of frustrated emails flying around.
As of now, officials from both institutions are working with Instructure to restore access, but there's no hard timeline on when things get back to normal. In the meantime, expect some workarounds — Google Classroom throwbacks, email chains, maybe even a PDF or two sent into the void.
This is a good reminder that when schools go all-in on a single third-party platform, a breach somewhere up the chain can bring everything to a grinding halt real fast.
